Based on the true story of Henri Charriere, also known as Papillon, which is French for 'butterfly' (the character even sports a large tattoo of a butterfly. A petty criminal, Papillon is wrongly convicted of murder and sentenced to life in a French penal colony in 'Guiane' (French Guiana, South America). Papillon is determined to escape but attempt after attempt meets with difficulty, resulting in eventual recapture. He continues his attempts to escape despite incarcerations in solitary confinement as punishment.

You can never forget the desperate attempt to survive the isolation portrayed by the talented Steve McQueen. Equally bright was the indomitable Dustin Hoffman as Louis Dega, the counterfeiter. The configuration and location really match the descriptions that are described in the book written by the father of all-Henri Charrière survivors. The DVD version includes a short review of Henry the prison where he was living for most of his life trying to escape, only to prove a point to their captors. In all, a DVD film Papillon that is a must-see for all lovers of classic cinema. Best viewed at 2:00 pm in the afternoon after a light meal on a Sunday afternoon with his favorite brand of beer.

I enjoyed watching this DivX Movie Papillon several times during the three decades since he was released. Yes, it is certainly a tragic and horrible story of how humanity can be brutal, but more importantly, it is an inspiring story of endurance and the triumph of human spirit in the face of overwhelming adversity. I often think of the closing scene where Papillon fleet outside the prison on the island in a raft of coconuts. This was actually my favorite movies of all Steve McQueen. Dustin Hoffman predicted the performance of the depth and richness of its ability to act. I recommend this movie. It's a classic.
