| We feel as if sinking into quicksand as one thing after another goes wrong. This is similar to the grim and (today) most famous "diversion." But it is almost as good. Mickey Rooney has always been an attractive artist. He is good, but not entirely credible. If Tom Neal has been the star, who had a real gem. Jeanne Cagney is surprisingly difficult as the girl falls in love with Rooney. It's easy to hate her character, which is the intention of the plot. Barbara Bates is not interesting as the girl who loved him all the time. When I was a young child I saw laughing and doing what I remember as a first version of "breaking" and announced the prizes for contestants on "Queen for a Day." Enough variety, like his brother! Without sacrificing any of the plot, just know that no matter where the player becomes, he gets a (usually figurative) slap in the face. He is sinking more and more and nothing you do seems to be lifting the mud. (It also has a great location and vaccines is a great issue in the honky-tonk in the middle of last century.) |
| One of the lesser known treasures of the classic black film, little tough this chronicle of an adopted child in a hapless criminal joy ride by its own success uncontrollable passions in part because of the brick-house design of the original story Cornell Woolrich, in part artfully chosen because of its cast. Linking the still-fresh face with Mickey Rooney creepily looking worn Jeanne Cagney immediately suggests corruption, the subtext that the child is just a pawn in a strange game being played between this nasty lady and her lover (Peter Lorre, looking for a shot over the line) makes the spine crawl. |
