| Much of the problem with the School of Art is the confidential nature of Jerome. Clowes writes graphic novels, and the main character who has written here is simply a cartoon figure without talking about the depth. Falls too fast for its ambition of becoming the greatest artist of the world to someone willing to compromise his talents for the sake of coming in first place in a school competition. Granted, it is flexible, aping whoever happens to be at this moment is a moment Bardo star Marvin Bushmiller student (Adam Scott) and the forthcoming adoption of the bitter, not nihilistic rantings of artist Jimmy (Jim Broadbent) as if these were his own beliefs. This could be interesting if Jerome, for example, the type of problems, the search for a child who plays Minghella Bee Season. Unfortunately it is not, and although Minghella is a good actor, there's not much you can do with what is essentially a stick figure. That's not to say that Art School Confidential is completely useless. Malkovich (also) is very funny, and it is Broadbent, but mostly it feels like this type of comedy room Jerome Vince could one day: too broad, obvious, and very self-conscious. Who wants to be cool, you want to be hip, but like Jerome, in its quest to be the next Picasso, is simply idea. |
| Let's cut to the prosecution: This is not Ghost World II - The Dark Side or bad is going to Santa c @ #! In 'Art Class, or the adaptation or elections or any other DVD film Art School Confidential I've seen in comparison with the comments. Personally avoid comparisons, like the plague, but here I can see why this is happening. The DVD film Art School Confidential just feels incredibly derivative, if pressed, I would say that it is more dangerous as the life of Altar Boys in general tone and the way it changes gears mid-film. I still enjoyed much for your great ballsiness, injected sad but true reality with regard to how the work on this planet (at art school or otherwise) and its premise derangedly biased. Also commendable is the way the DivX Movie Art School Confidential ends up being obvious and subtle at the same time, in many ways. There are tons of irony, as well as in any good Zwigoff / Clowes film. My favorite bit has to be as poor Jerome (Max M., perfectly cast) is still trying to get Professor Sandiford (Malkovich in excellent modest way) the approval in vain. Even when Jimmy steals paintings, hoping desperately that Sandiford now appreciate "their" darker work, no - he said the teacher, in effect, "Do not worry, you leave this stage" - and this is another subtle, ~ as an artist (any kind) can not do the work for the success, fame or approval, it must be done by the mere thrill of creation and the deep need to express what needs to get out from the inside. |
