Shifty timber tycoon Gregory Stark ('Ryan O'Neal' (qv)) is being systematically blackmailed and the use of regular private detectives have proved ineffective. Stark decides to call upon the services of the renowned, reclusive Daryl Zero ('Bill Pullman (qv)), supposedly the world's greatest detective. Stark is very surprised to find himself discussing the intimate details of the case with Zero's amiable associate Steve Arlo ('Stiller, Ben' (qv)) who explains Zero's propensity for never meeting with clients. Zero, using his two 'obs' of objectivity and observation, quickly discovers the identity of the blackmailer but continues the case in order to discover exactly why the seemingly ordinary Gloria Sullivan ('Kim Dickens' (qv)) is attacking Stark in this fashion. As Zero becomes more engrossed in the case and, even worse for him, becomes personally involved with Gloria he is forced to decide between the blackmailer and his client!

Excellent story and dialogue. Certainly underestimated. The film: Zero Effect has great performances by Kim Dickens and Bill Pullman and Ben Stiller. This seems to have gone unnoticed by most people, but he was intelligent and entertaining. The plot has many moves and turns, but the plot twists is not what makes the film: Zero Effect great. The characters and their development are what make this Zero Effect Mystery unique. Daryl Zero is one of the most memorable private detectives that I have seen and his relationship with Gloria Sullivan (Kim Dickens) is well developed. Daryl's partner, Ben Stiller, is very interesting because their loyalty is tested throughout the film. At first it was difficult to determine how astute Daryl - that really is "more careful" person in the world? Or is that a false Bumbling? As the story develops, you can see how Daryl Zero is adept. Even the soundtrack is good with a great song by Nick Cave.

Here's the thing about "zero effect", which has to do more than once. Is one of those movies that just improving every time I see it. Bothers me that this film: Zero Effect does not see the kind of success that plays what really deserves, but I have a feeling that may well become a cult classic. Bill Pullman (who usually can not stand) really threw me a loop as Daryl Zero. I can really recommend this Zero Effect Mystery film enough.

I have not seen this in theaters because most of the critics here were rejected, so I found that when the video and what I wanted was not available. I should have ignored the criticism. Even if, like me, you are not well versed in Sherlock Holmes (which this movie: Zero Effect is based on), you should enjoy this movie. Bill Pullman as Daryl Zero is wonderful, living your life by two obstacles: the observation and objectivity. " It's rare, but not too eccentric, and very credible and touching. Ben Stiller is a good foil as its figurehead. Kim Dickens PALOOKAVILLE shows and after that she is a talent to watch. I even liked Ryan O'Neal, whom I am not a fan. I am definitely waiting for the upcoming Jake Kasdan film, it seems that may be as talented as his father.
