At Borstal, Brendan is forced to live face-to-face with those he perceived as 'the enemy,' a confrontation that reveals a deep inner conflict in the young Brendan and forces a self-examination that is both traumatic and revealing. Events take an unexpected turn and Brendan is thrown into a complete spin. In the emotional vortex, he finally faces up to the truth.

I read the book six times and could not wait to see the film. I was out of place to put first, because much of the Borstal Boy Drama film is pure fiction. Charlie and Brendan only had a slight spat in his three years in reform schools, and finished the best of friends anyway. The girl in the Borstal Boy Drama never existed, and much of the rest of the Borstal Boy movie was also oddly fictitious. Millwall Charlie was in Southampton when it was sunk off Malta (Mediterranean), but I guess it uses the HMS Prince Of Wales because there were films that deal with the sinking of the ship, and he did a good way to know that Brendan Charlie was dead (much more powerful than the scene in the book and the book). Despite all that, I loved the movie. Brendan Behan actually say "love can English people without them being seven feet in height or one hundred years dead." I think he made that statement because I knew that Charlie Millwall so well, and had seen many other good people among the English people with whom he was connected in one way or another. The Warden, Mr. Joyce was a very good person, and so many others. I think Brendan Behan had a serious relationship with Charlie Millwall (obviously in the book but never write exactly). I would recommend the book to anyone, and believe that the Borstal Boy Drama film was very good, irrespective of fiction. Shawn Hatosy does a very good job in the movie, Danny Dyer and is even better. Do not miss this film.
Peter Sheridan, the director of "Borstal Boy" shows a good sensitivity to the material based on the life of Brendan Behan. Having seen the play only in the Lyceum theater in the'70s, it was fascinating to see what kind of adaptation that was on the screen. The best thing in the Borstal Boy Drama is the young cast members gathered for the film. What emerges in the film: Borstal Boy is the friendships made in the reform camp Mr. Behan affected for life. The fact that young people can get to someone like Brendan as different as Charlie, speaks of the tolerance for someone who comes from Brendan's Fund. Shawn Hatosy does a wonderful job in its image of Brendan Behan. For an actor born in America, this young man clearly shows a series that many of his contemporaries lack. In the role of Charlie Milwall, Danny Dyer gives a brilliant performance. Lee Ingleby as the cruel Dale, is perfect. Eva Birthistle as director Joyce's daughter, is the only woman in a man's world and she does a great job in making the girl come to life. Michael York has a good chance in the role of Joyce. The only problem with the DVD movie Borstal Boy is that the dialogue is difficult to follow, either because of the sound track, or the heavy accent Mr. Sheridan has everyone talking as a way to show authenticity. We have seen the DVD version, and had to turn the volume up, and still sounded muffled. Despite that flaw, "Borstal Boy" is a powerful Borstal Boy Drama movie that needs to be seen.
I rented this because I had interest in Brendan Behan. Well, I was surprised by this film. Shawn Hatosy is brilliant as a young Behan. You must see this. I was totally out of the story and characters. All actors are credible and true. Do not refer to the IRA that I know very little. This takes place during WWII and it is interesting that the character Behan, albeit very primitive and dedicated commitment to the Republic of Ireland, in fact, granted, given the much more devastating events happening in the broader field of world, for a time at least he is willing to "lay down their arms and not resist. I must mention the music. Sorry, I do not know the name of the composer, but the atmosphere is wonderful and appropriate Gaelic at the right times. The songs are all wonderful especially the final song which is heard in a real emotional center point and towards the end of the film. I do not speak or write much. I love this movie. I highly recommend to people who like the character-driven films.
Sure, the script has a contemporary sensibility, but how this fascinating little gem is lost? Far from perfect, but consider all the issues and dumb-things that has been exploding on the screen in recent years. The story was more interesting than I had anticipated, I was a child when Brendan Behan died, my father mourning the loss of a talent so young alcoholic. Difficult to reconcile the character so well recorded by Shawn Hatosy succumb to a life of alcohol, as it presented the portrait, and so well acted, is one of a couple overcoming both admirable. Charlie, so well played by Danny Dyer, it is very interesting, it would have been more satisfactory than the expansion of writers characters (the story itself takes about 85 minutes). However, this deserves much more attention and appreciation, very good (how about a sequel, set here in the U.S.)? SPOILERS! I have no idea if, as others have asked, the script is correct. However, a small nits. As a man with dual heritage of minorities (Jews and gays) (I am), I am so damn tired of sympathy given to us on the screen, we only have beaten before curtain! Let the bad guys are dying for a change.
